Peace, Health and Medical Work - Autumn semester 2013 (10 ECTS course, Tromsø)

’Peace, Health and Medical Work’ (HEL-3011) is an elective module at the University of Tromsø, offered to students who are interested in health-related peace and conflict work.

 

As the world’s first of it’s kind, this Master-level module creates awareness about the peace building capacities of health professionals before, during and after violence.

Two week course at master level about War, violence and health

At the University of Bergen, Norway, a new two week course at master level about War, violence and health will be organized in April 2013. The course will cover the links between war, violence and health, structural violence, underlying causes of violent conflict, consequences of war and violence, the role of health personnel in prevention of violence, rehabilitation and reconciliation, human rights and international humanitarian law, refugee and migration challenges. The students must complete four online Medical Peace Work courses (course 1, 3, 4 and 5 - estimated to require four days of work) before they attend the five days with face-to-face teaching and group work from the15th to the 19th April 2013. At the very end the students will spend one day writing a home assignment on the refugee situation in the participants´ own country or a country of choice. Drones: the physical and psychological implications of a global theatre of war

On October 13th Medact launched its report "Drones: the physical and psychological implications of a global theatre of war". In the past decade, there has been an exponential increase in the proliferation and use of armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as ‘drones’. For the first time in history, it is possible to attack an enemy thousands of miles away without fear of retaliation.  In addition to the number of deaths and injuries of innocent civilians caused by their use, there is increasing evidence of the psychological damage to people living under the constant threat of drone attack, and to the drone operators themselves. The Norwegian Medical Association (NMA) has accredited the seven MPW courses for all medical specialties with the following amount of CME hours/points:

  • MPW course 4: 8 hours
  • MPW course 5: 8 hours
  • MPW course 6: 10 hours
  • MPW course 7: 6 hours
